118. Even angels are broken | The Ironman lesson on self-pity and courage

Today I saw a one-armed man walking a three-legged dog. My first reaction was pity. I’m not proud of that, but it’s true. Pity is judgment in a kinder costume.

That reminded me of mile 14 of my first Ironman.

My right foot stopped working. The pain was unbearable. I was wallowing in self-pity so deep I was about to quit, until I lifted my eyes and saw a man on a prosthetic leg running 15 feet in front of me. 125 miles into the same race. He looked happier than I’d felt all day.

That moment changed everything. Not just the race. The way I judge myself, and the way I judge other people, and the way those two things turn out to be the same thing.

🎧 Press play. Even angels are broken.
