73. Why women have less confidence than men | The Confidence Gap

My friend Ellen Miller is a rock star. First American woman to summit Everest from both routes. 21st person ever to summit Nuptse. And the reason I understand the Confidence Gap.

In 2003, Cornell psychologist David Dunning and his student Joyce Ehrlinger discovered something brutal. Despite being equally competent, women underestimate their abilities and men overestimate theirs. Hewlett-Packard later proved it in the workplace. Women apply for promotions when they meet 100% of qualifications. Men apply at 60%. Same job. Same skills. Different confidence.

Here’s the cold truth. A confident person with less skill is more likely to get promoted than a less confident person with more skill. That’s the Confidence Gap. And it’s costing you.

In this episode, I break down why the gap exists, why it shows up in kids before they even know what work is, and the 5 things to do this week to start closing it.

🎧 Press play. Confidence is a muscle. Time to start lifting.
