In February 2022, Daveed Walzer Panadero watched the news about Ukraine, looked at his two-year-old daughter, and bought a one-way ticket to Poland. He didn’t speak Polish. Or Ukrainian. He rented an Airbnb in Krakow, went to the train station, and started taking refugees home.
He helped 1,200 of them.
That’s the difference between empathy and radical empathy. Empathy is the rest of us feeling bad while we sip our half-caf almond milk lattes. Radical empathy in leadership goes one further, like Nigel from Spinal Tap said, all the way to 11.
In this episode, I break down what radical empathy actually means at work, why it’s transformational instead of just nice, and the 6 concrete steps you can take this week to put it into practice.
🎧 Press play. Time to turn the knob to 11.
In this episode:
▶ The Daveed Walzer Panadero story and what 1,200 refugees teaches us about leadership
▶ Why traditional empathy isn’t enough for radical empathy in leadership
▶ The Spinal Tap principle of going to 11
▶ Step 1: Active Listening (and the phrases that make it real)
▶ Step 2: Embrace Diversity (beyond just skin color)
▶ Step 3: Challenge Your Biases (everyone has them, including you)
▶ Step 4: Be an Advocate (complaining isn’t action)
▶ Step 5: Build Trust through transparency and accountability
▶ Step 6: Support Each Other’s Growth
If you’ve been thinking empathy is something you “have” rather than something you actively do, this one’s for you.
