It wasn’t the iPhone that killed Nokia. It was over-empowerment.

Nokia’s CEO believed in empowering people, which is great. Then he kept turning the knob. He gave so much autonomy to every division that each department ran like its own company. Hardware ignored software. Software ignored hardware. The whole thing collapsed under the weight of empowerment with no oversight and no alignment.

If your chocolate chip cookie recipe calls for a quarter cup of sugar, putting in a whole cup doesn’t make it 300% better. It makes it inedible. Same with empowerment.
